High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Prestons Public School we are passionate about supporting every child to reach their full potential through a diverse selection of High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) initiatives. Our classrooms, from Kindergarten through to Year 6, offer stimulating and thought-provoking learning experiences that encourage growth, creativity, and foster a genuine love of learning.
We provide students across all years with a curriculum that is carefully differentiated, offering tasks that vary in pace, complexity, and challenge students to think at higher levels. Individual strengths and interests are recognised and addressed through tailored supports, enabling all learners at Prestons to flourish.
Our teaching practices place a strong focus on explicitly developing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, seamlessly incorporated into every learning area. Ongoing formative assessment guides our approach, helping us track individual progress and adjust learning opportunities where needed.
Students engaged in HPGE programs benefit from challenging activities and resources that stretch their capabilities, while still ensuring all curriculum requirements are met. At Prestons Public School, we embed our 7 Learner Qualities—problem solver, curiosity, resilience, reflective, determined, collaborative, and brave—throughout every aspect of school life, empowering our students to excel and confidently face new challenges.

At Prestons Public School our students actively participate in a wide variety of High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) programs across NSW that enhance our students’ academic, creative, social, and physical development. The Premier’s Spelling Bee encourages our students to expand their vocabulary and sharpen their attention to detail within a competitive framework. Through Debating competitions, students develop confidence in public speaking and the ability to construct logical, persuasive arguments.
Our involvement in the Game Changer Challenge empowers students to tackle future-focused problems by applying design thinking and innovative problem-solving skills. Alongside this, the Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) promotes whole-school engagement in physical activity, alongside leadership opportunities and professional learning for staff.
Students also have opportunities to participate in the Representative School Sport Pathway and PSSA events, where they can trial and compete at regional, state, and national levels. These sporting programs foster key values such as discipline, commitment, and teamwork, supporting the holistic growth of every learner.
